What is the purpose of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to develop learners' understanding and knowledge in motor vehicle services and to support progression to the next level of vocational learning in motor vehicle services or a related area. It is particularly appropriate for:
• Young people interested in a career in the motor vehicle sector who intend, but are not yet ready, to access level 2 qualifications or a level 2 apprenticeship.
• Young people and adults, including those who have had a significant break from or disjointed experience of education, who wish to work in the motor vehicle sector but need a grounding in the subject and an opportunity to develop more general employability skills, usually over a one year period, before applying for work.
What skills, knowledge, or understanding does this qualification develop?
This qualification provides a range of introductory skills, as well as core knowledge, relevant to the motor vehicle sector, alongside generic employability skills which are needed both in the motor vehicle industry and across other sectors.
Mandatory units include:
• Health and Safety Practices in Vehicle Maintenance
• Tools, Equipment and Materials for Vehicle Maintenance
Optional units include knowledge and skills relevant to different job roles in the sector (such as routine vehicle and motorcycle checks, fuel, braking and suspension systems, component fitting and maintenance) alongside generic employability skills (such as time-management and solving work-related problems).
How is this qualification different from other, similar qualifications?
This qualification is part of a suite which includes an Award, Certificate and Diploma. You should take the Diploma if you need a comprehensive introduction to the sector, as well as more generic workplace skills, usually over a two-year period, before progressing to a level 2 Apprenticeship or Level 2 qualification, or to employment (with further training where possible), as illustrated in the target learner profiles provided above.
Which sector does this qualification support?
You could progress from this qualification to an entry-level role in the motor vehicle sector such as bodyshop, workshop or spray-painter’s assistant but job roles at this level are very limited. You could progress to a job role as an apprentice. Job roles for apprentices are typically technician roles such as motorcycle service technician, light vehicle service technician, auto electrical technician or lift truck technician.
What are the progression options?
You can progress to a level 2 certificate or diploma in the motor vehicle sector or to a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, although it is recommended that you also have maths skills at level 1.
