Assessment Guidance

Assessment Guidance: Learners should be working with and closely supervised by a suitably qualified and experienced adult when addressing Learning Outcomes 2 and 3. They should not be expected to take full responsibility for cleaning and maintaining animal accommodation.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Know about cleaning and maintaining animal accommodation. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Outline why it is important to follow correct procedures when preparing equipment, materials and accommodation for cleaning and when carrying out cleaning and maintenance of animal accommodation.

  • 1.2

    Describe ways to promote health and well-being of animals through appropriate provision, cleaning and maintenance of accommodation.

  • 1.3

    Outline possible hazards which may arise in the animal’s accommodation, and reasons why they should be reported if identified.

  • 1.4

    State their responsibilities when cleaning and maintaining animal accommodation under animal welfare and health and safety legislation. 


2.

Be able to assist with cleaning animal accommodation. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Prepare appropriate equipment and materials and the animal accommodation ready for cleaning.

  • 2.2

    Use appropriate procedures to assist in cleaning the animal’s accommodation. 

  • 2.3

    Leave the animal accommodation in the appropriate condition after cleaning.

  • 2.3

    Carry out cleaning tasks in a way that minimises risks to the health, safety and well-being of the animal and self.


3.

Be able to assist with maintaining animal accommodation. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Check the animal accommodation against given guidelines.

  • 3.2

    Keep the animal accommodation safe and secure. 

  • 3.3

    Correctly identify and report any hazards.

  • 3.4

    Dispose of any waste in a safe manner and place.
