Assessment Guidance

Assessment Guidance: Learners should be working with and closely supervised by a suitably qualified and experienced adult when addressing Learning Outcomes 2 and 3. They should not be expected to take full responsibility for ensuring the health and well-being of animals .

Unit Learning Outcomes

Know about health and wellbeing in animals. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Describe signs of health in different animal species. 

  • 1.2

    Describe ways of promoting the health and wellbeing of animals and minimising stress or injury, including as appropriate


    • approaches to preventative care
    • importance of exercise
    • enabling animals to optimise their own physical functioning and appearance.
  • 1.3

    Describe indicators of possible problems with the health and well-being of different animals and actions to take when these occur.

  • 1.4

    Outline their responsibility for maintaining animal health and wellbeing under health and safety and animal welfare legislation.

Be able to assess the physical state of an animal through a visual check.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Check for visual signs of health in a specific animal.

  • 2.2

    Check for visual signs of ill-health, including presence of ecto-parasites, stress and pain in a specific animal

  • 2.3

    Record and report status of animal health using appropriate reporting format and procedures.

Be able to administer preventative care for an animal.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Administer preventative care for an animal, in line with given guidelines.

  • 3.3

    Use appropriate restraint techniques while administering preventative care.

  • 3.3

    Work in a way which complies with health and safety legislation, including use of correct PPE, while administering preventative care.

  • 3.4

    Dispose of any waste from provision of preventative care correctly.
