Assessment Guidance

Assessment Guidance: Learners should be working with and closely supervised by a suitably qualified and experienced adult when addressing Learning Outcomes 3 and 4. They should not be expected to take full responsibility for feeding or grooming animals.

Know about providing food and water to animals. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    State why it is important when providing food and water to animals to

    • use correct methods and systems for feeding animals
    • follow appropriate hygiene requirements
    • dispose of waste correctly.
  • 1.2

    Outline their responsibility for safe and effective animal handling during the feeding process, under relevant legislation and codes of practice.

Know about grooming animals.

    State why it is important to groom certain animals.

  • 2.2

    Describe grooming requirements and techniques for different animals.

  • 2.3

    Outline how key grooming tools and equipment are used.

    Outline key health and safety considerations when grooming animals.

Be able to assist with providing food and water for animals. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Feed animals in accordance with instructions.

  • 3.2

    Supply water to the animals from the correct sources, in the correct quantities and using the system in accordance with instructions.

  • 3.3

    Monitor and report on the animal's feeding and drinking habits.

  • 3.4

    Clean and maintain equipment ready for use and store it safely and securely in an appropriate place.

  • 3.5

    Dispose of any waste from feeding in the correct manner and place.

  • 3.6

    Maintain health and safety, and the welfare of animals, during feeding and watering.

Be able to groom an animal. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1

    Select and prepare appropriate items of grooming equipment.

  • 4.2

    Use appropriate restraining techniques while grooming.

  • 4.3

    Use appropriate techniques and procedures to groom an animal.

  • 4.4

    Use, clean and store PPE, tools and equipment safely.

  • 4.5

    Maintain the safety of self, others and the animal while grooming.
