  • 1.1

    Give reasons why it is important to:

    • know about the temperament and usual behaviour patterns of the animal being moved, handled, captured or restrained
    • be aware of the different factors that can affect an animal’s behaviour during moving, handling, catching and restraint
    • monitor an animal’s response to being moved, handled, captured or restrained
    • minimise risks when moving, handling, catching and restraining animals
  • 1.2

    Outline their responsibilities for health and safety and animal welfare when moving handling, catching and restraining animals, under relevant legislation and codes of practice.

Know about safe and effective practice in moving, handling, catching and restraining small animals.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Outline the correct methods for moving different animals, and for settling them in a new place.

  • 2.2

    Outline safe and effective methods of handling different animals.

  • 2.3

    Outline safe and effective methods for catching and restraining different animals, including use of appropriate equipment.

  • 2.4

    Describe appropriate behaviours for those moving, handling, catching and restraining animals.

Be able to assist with moving small animal(s) on site.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Approach the animal(s) calmly, confidently and in a way that is likely to minimise stress.

  • 3.2

    Monitor the animal’s behaviour and its response to being moved and report any problems to the appropriate person.

  • 3.3

    Work in a way that minimises risks to the health, safety and well-being of the animal(s), self and other animals and people on site.

  • 3.4

    Assist in settling the animal(s) in the new location.

Be able to assist with handling a small animal.

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1

    Approach and handle the animal in a manner likely to promote its co-operation and minimise the possibility of distress.

  • 4.2

    Handle the animal in a manner that minimises risks to the health and safety of the animal and self and is consistent with relevant legislation and codes of practice.

  • 4.3

    Monitor the animal’s behaviour and its response to handling and report any problems to the appropriate person.

Be able to assist with catching and restraining an animal.

Assessment Criteria

  • 5.1

    Identify suitable equipment for catching and restraining the animal. 

  • 5.2

    Approach and handle the animal in a manner likely to promote its co-operation and minimise the possibility of distress.

  • 5.3

    Use appropriate equipment and techniques to assist in catching and restraining an animal.

  • 5.4

    Work in a way that minimises risks to the health and safety of the animal and self and is consistent with relevant legislation and codes of practice.
