Aim

Working effectively with others is extremely important in the health and social care and child care sectors. The aim of this unit is to consider why it is important to work as a member of team and to work in partnership with external agencies to best meet the needs of the individual.

Know how to work together with others

Additional details

The importance of working with others can include:

  • opportunities to share ideas and learn from each other 
  • provide support and encouragement
  • problem solve and make decisions together
  • share responsibility for actions

Examples of working together may include:

  • planning activities, discussing care plans
  • team meetings
  • setting up work areas
  • providing for the care needs of individuals e.g. bathing

Way of working well together may include:

  • sharing ideas and reaching a consequences
  • respecting the opinions of others
  • listening to other team members and taking advice
  • constructive feedback

Ineffective ways of working together may include:

  • individuals do not do their job to the standard required
  • communication between staff is poor
  • individuals compete rather than cooperate
  • responsibilities are shared out unevenly or without considering where they might best sit

Understand partnership working in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings.

Additional details

When working in health and social care or with children and young people there are a number of different organisations involved in providing a range of services. Although each organisation will provide different services it is essential that they all work together to meet the needs of the individual. Duplication of services, misunderstandings or a lack of service could result from not working together in partnership. 

Learners can carry out research on the partners that may be involved. These could include education department, social and health services, voluntary organisations, care homes etc. 

Benefits of partnership working could include:

  • ability to plan together, leading a better quality care plan
  • a seamless/holistic experience of care/support for the individual
  • effective and efficient use of resources
