Aim

The aim of this unit is to know about different mental health and some of the causes. The unit also considers the importance of effective communication when working with individuals with mental health illnesses.

Know the importance of a "person centred" approach when working with individuals with mental health problems.

Additional details

A person centred approach respects the individual's wishes and preferences when agreeing an appropriate care plan.

    Give examples of how to use a person centred approach when working with individuals with mental health problems.

Know the main factors that can cause mental health problems.

Additional details

The main factors may include:


  • genetics may contribute to being at risk of developing mental illness
  • childhood abuse, trauma, violence, neglect
  • stress
  • unemployment
  • homelessness or poor housing
  • social isolation, loneliness
  • discrimination

The range of mental health problems can include:


  • anxiety and panic attacks
  • eating problems
  • depression
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • post traumatic stress disorder.

There are other examples that the tutor and learner may consider that are equally valid.

The benefits of effective communication may include:


  • the opportunity to share information about themselves and feelings
  • feeling valued - someone is willing to listening and support 
  • improved self esteem and confidence
  • hearing about similar experiences to their own

Active listening skills can be an opportunity to:


  • gain valuable information about the individual
  • ensure appropriate responses
  • helps to understand the person better
