Weston College

Many FE colleges work with learners who are already in employment, highly motivated, but held back by language barriers, confidence and unfamiliarity with working life in the UK. Moving straight to Functional Skills English is often unrealistic and risks disengagement.
In this webinar, Weston College shares how they partnered with Yeo Valley to create a more supportive starting point for ESOL learners working in factory roles, building confidence, practical workplace communication skills and a clear route into Functional Skills English.

You will hear directly from Weston College about:

  • Why Functional Skills was not the right starting point for many learners
  • How flexible use of qualifications supported speaking, listening and confidence
  • How delivery was shaped around shift patterns, onsite learning and employer needs
  • How learners progressed into Functional Skills including to Level 2
  • The benefits for the employer, including progression into supervisory roles
  •  How this approach strengthened long term employer partnerships.

You will leave with practical ideas you can apply in your own provision, and a clear understanding of how flexible qualifications can support learners from their true starting points, rather than forcing a one size fits all model.
