The unit should be assessed by a Portfolio of Evidence.

For learning outcome 3 in this unit, learners must provide assessment evidence that has been produced in a real working environment, while supporting learners aged between 3 and 25 years, with special educational needs and disability.

Simulation is not permitted.

Understand the four broad areas of special educational need (SEN).

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Explain how high and low incidence SEN are grouped into four broad areas.

  • 1.2

    Explain how special educational needs are distinct from other factors that can impede learning.

  • 1.3

    Summarise the difficulties with learning associated with each of the broad areas of need.

  • 1.4

    Explain how an individual learner’s experience of SEN might relate to one or more of the broad areas of need, including experience of difficulties across areas.

  • 1.5

    Explain how individual learners’ needs may change over time.

Understand how SEN is identified.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Explain the principles of identification of SEN.

  • 2.2

    Explain the processes used in identifying different high and low incidence SEN.

  • 2.3

    Summarise the role of different professionals in identifying SEN.

Be able to use understanding of SEN to identify appropriate support strategies for learners.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Apply understanding of different learners’ particular strengths and difficulties to select appropriate support strategies that will contribute to positive outcomes for learners.
