2. — Understand local area networks (LAN).

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1.

    Evaluate the concept of a LAN including its advantages and disadvantages over a collection of standalone microcomputers.

  • 2.2.

    Explain the components of a LAN including their functions.

  • 2.3.

    Analyse three basic network topologies, including:

    • a) detailing the way they are interconnected
    • b) advantages of each network topology
    • c) disadvantages of each network topology.
3. — Understand wide area networks (WAN).

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1.

    Analyse the concept of a WAN, including its advantages and disadvantages within a global communication perspective.

  • 3.2.

    Justify the choice of a range of communication links for particular specifications.

  • 3.3.

    Explain the way that the following handle data:

    • circuit-switching
    • message-switching
    • packet-switching.
4. — Be able to analyse elements of network communication.
