Aim

The purpose of the unit is to develop students' understanding of the human brain and behaviour.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Understand how case studies can be used to help researchers understand localisation of function.

Case studies could include but not limited HM, Clive Wearing, KF etc. Brain.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

Explain how one case study of a brain damaged patient has helped researchers to understand the localisation of function.

  • 1.2

Evaluate the use of case studies for identifying the localisation of function.

2.

Be able to evaluate the brain techniques used to study brain, behaviour and localisation of function.

Scanning techniques could include MRI, fMRI, PET, Electroencephalography.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

Explain one brain scanning technique used to study the brain.

  • 2.2

    Evaluate the brain-scanning technique.

3.

Understand research that has investigated the impact of the environment on the brain and behaviour.

Studies could include but not limited to:

  • Maguire et al. (2000): Taxi Driver study.
  • Davey et al. (2017): Self‐appraisal processes in depression.
  • Luby et al. (2013): Impact of poverty on the brain.
  • Riccelli, R et al (2016): Neuroanatomical basis of the five-factor model of Personality.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

Describe one study that has investigated the impact of the environment on brain and behaviour.

  • 3.2

Evaluate the study chosen for 3.1.
