Aim

The aim of this unit is to consider ways to respect and value children and why it is important.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Know how to respect and value children as individuals.

Additional details

Reasons for respecting children may be some of the following:

  • it is their right as a human being
  • they will become role models for others
  • it encourages independence, confidence and self esteem

Learners may consider how the adult respects children e.g. paying attention to them when they are speaking, offering choices, setting realistic expectations, praising appropriately, not being patronising.

    Give ways to value children as individuals.

    State reasons why children need to be respected as individuals.

Understand ways to respect and value children.

Additional details

Examples of communicating with children may include:


  • taking time to listen to them
  • encouraging them to share their ideas 
  • use their ideas, if appropriate
  • value their opinions

Examples of appropriate behaviour may include:


  • being serious with them and not dismissing them
  • spending time with them
  • use of language e.g. tone, vocabulary

    Identify ways to communicate with children to ensure that they feel valued.

    Outline behaviour that shows respect and value of children.

Know that children have rights.

Additional details

There is a range of organisations that promote the rights of the child. The following are only a sample. Tutors and learners may suggest others that are equally valid.

  • Save the Children

Learners may want to consider The United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child although they do not require an in-depth knowledge.
