Additional details

Learners should consider the care needs of babies and young children. This could include nappy changing, bathing, checking for rashes or sores, washing and brushing hair, infestations in the hair, cleaning teeth, checking health of teeth.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    •skin
    •hair
    •teeth
    •nappy area

2

Know how to support physical care routines for babies and young children.

Additional details

All children should be treated with respect and sensitivity during physical care routines. Learner should consider why this is important and ways in which this can be achieved. This may include where a child is changed and the interaction between the adult and child during the routine.

Toilet training will be covered in more detail in higher level qualifications however learners can consider the key principles of toilet training. Toilet training can only begin properly when the child has appropriate muscle control. The stages of toilet training can then be considered i.e. tells the carer they need to use the toilet, dry during the day, dry at night.

Assessment Criteria

3

Know how to support safe and protective environments for babies and young children.

Additional details

In this learning outcome, learners can consider the home and external environments e.g. nursery provision. They may consider the carer's own hygiene routines including the use of personal protective clothing in ensuring an hygienic environment. They can also consider ways to make sure play equipment is safe, clean and suitable for the age of the child. Learners can research different types of safety equipment that is available for example stair gates, electric socket covers. Finding the balance between supervision and providing opportunities to explore is incredibly difficult. However, learners need to know that intervention is essential if the child is going to harm themselves or others.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

Describe how to provide a safe and hygienic environment for babies and young children.

The 'eat-well' plate may be a useful tool for this task.
