    Identify different fabrics and explain why they are suitable for suiting.
  • 1.2
    Describe characteristics of each identified fabric including fibre content and width.
  • 1.3
    Identify cost and suppliers of selected fabrics.
  • 1.4
    Identify different types of lining and explain why they are suitable for tailoring.


Be able to use hand stitching techniques used in tailoring.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1
    Produce a reference folder of tailoring stitching samples, including:
    a) pad stitch
    b) basting stitch
    c) back stitch
    d) felling stitch
    e) mark stitch
    f) cross stitch
    g) blind stitch
    h) handmade buttonhole
  • 2.2
    Supplement each sample with explanatory diagrams and notes on use.


Be able to use standard and personal measurements.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1
    Use the main standard body sections.
  • 3.2
    Compare standard measurements to personal measurements for each body section.
  • 3.3
    Make simple adjustments to personal body measurements and explain why they were necessary.


Understand health and safety requirements in the workshop.

  • 4.1
    Identify key health and safety issues that are likely to arise in the practice of tailoring techniques.
  • 4.2
    Conduct all activity undertaken in the practice of tailoring techniques in line with relevant health and safety procedures and regulations.
