Aim

The aim of this unit is to consider the value of technology for young children and what practitioners can provide to develop learning in this area.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Know technology toys or activities for young children.

Examples of technology toys or activities may include:

a) babies under 12 months - toy phones, simple electronic toys, exploring technology in the home

b) 1-2 years - toddlers are aware of washing machines, televisions, IT equipment, phones; use timers in activities, pressing buttons at traffic crossings, highlighting technology when visiting the supermarket

c) 3-5 years - simple digital equipment, interactive musical instruments, using vacuum cleaners, toys with batteries, digital cameras

Learners may find it helps to consider different areas of development when identifying the benefits of using technology.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1
    List technology toys or activities suitable for the following aged children
    a) babies under 12 months
    b) young children 1 to 2 years
    c) young children 3 to 5 years.
  • 1.2
    Identify the benefits for the child for an activity in each age range listed.

Know how technology toys or activities support children’s learning and development.

Expected learning may include:

  • use of different senses
  • developing logical thinking
  • improving reaction times
  • finding information

Ways technology can support different areas of learning may include:

a) physical - improve coordination, help develop fine motor skills

b) intellectual - helps solve problems, develops logical thinking skills

c) language - increase vocabulary, increase understanding of technology
