Be able to prepare a range of bare and previously painted and decorated surfaces to receive coatings/covering systems.

Preparation of work areas

  • flooring and surface protection
  • signage and barriers
  • selection of tools for the task
  • removal of existing surfaces using steam stripper and scraper
  • removal of surfaces using a paper scorer and water
  • filling and sanding down of previously painted surfaces
  • removal of paint with chemical paint removers and scrapers
  • removal of paint through a hot air gun
  • wearing of PPE and disposal of hot and chemical paint debris

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1
    Protect the work area prior to starting the work.
  • 1.2
    Select the correct tools, equipment and materials needed for the specified preparation process.
  • 1.3
    Prepare bare and previously painted substrates and correct defects to the given specification.

    Remove old paint systems with appropriate tools.

    Remove existing wall coverings by hand correctly.

Be able to correct defects in surfaces and surface coatings.

Preparation of surface defects

  • identification of defect
  • application of fillers mixed and premixed
  • sanding down of filled surfaces
  • PPE – use of dust mask and extraction ventilation

  • 2.1
    Identify and rectify different defects to surfaces and surface coatings.
  • 2.2
    Protect the work area correctly prior to starting the work.
  • 2.3
    Select the correct materials, tools and equipment needed for the specified rectification processes.
  • 2.4
    Work to current environmental and relevant health and safety regulations when correcting defects in surface and surface coatings.

Be able to repair and make good surfaces.

Repair of surfaces

  • removal of any loose backing
  • cutting out of cracked areas
  • application of strengthening to cracks
  • consider size of defect
  • small patch plastering skim
  • filling to areas
  • sanding and refilling if required
  • knotting of timber surfaces
  • application of primers to plaster and timber
