    Explain how words and symbols in expressions and formulae are used to represent variable quantities (numbers), not things.

    Explain the order in which elements of an algebraic expression must be worked out (e.g. contents of brackets should be worked out first).

    Evaluate expressions and make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols to produce results.
