After decades of exceptional service, our longest-serving Trustee, Anne Thompson, has retired from the Board.

Throughout her time with Gateway Qualifications, Anne has been a trusted leader, valued colleague and passionate advocate for educational opportunity. Whether leading committees, supporting senior appointments or helping the organisation navigate change, she has consistently stepped forward when her experience and judgement were needed most.

A lifelong commitment to Access to Higher Education

Portrait of Anne Thompson, longest-serving trustee at Gateway Qualifications, marking her retirement after decades of service to education and governance.

Anne Thompson’s involvement with Gateway Qualifications stretches back far beyond the organisation’s current identity.

Long before Gateway Qualifications existed, Anne was helping to shape the development of Access to Higher Education (Access to HE) and widening participation.

She was the first Coordinator of the North and East London Access Federation and was involved in some of the earliest work that laid the foundations for Access to HE as we know it today.

Many people can point to a long career. Far fewer can point to a career that has remained relevant, influential and genuinely useful over such a sustained period of time.

Helping Gateway Qualifications navigate change

In recent times, Gateway Qualifications has faced a number of significant challenges and opportunities. At each stage, Anne’s experience, judgement and commitment have helped the organisation navigate them successfully.

One of the most important recent projects was the relicensing process for Access Validating Agencies (AVAs) following changes introduced by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

This complex process involved detailed scrutiny of:

  • Policies and procedures
  • Governance arrangements
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Quality assurance frameworks

As Chair of the Access to HE Committee, Anne played a central role throughout that process. She brought not only technical knowledge but also historical perspective.

Very few people have the depth of understanding she possesses when it comes to Access to HE regulation, quality assurance and governance. She was able to support the executive team, challenge where necessary and help ensure that the Board maintained appropriate oversight throughout.

The successful outcome of the relicensing process was a major achievement for Gateway Qualifications and Anne made an important contribution to that success.

At the same time, she continued to take on responsibilities that went well beyond what might reasonably be expected.

When a fellow trustee became seriously unwell, Anne stepped in to provide leadership within the Governance Committee. She took on additional responsibilities without hesitation and ensured continuity at a point when the organisation needed it. Characteristically, she would probably describe this simply as doing what was required. Those who worked alongside her know that it represented a significant commitment of time and energy.

The same sense of responsibility was evident during the recruitment of Gateway Qualifications’ current Chief Executive.

Leadership transitions are rarely simple. They involve practical decisions, careful judgement and, above all, an understanding that organisations are made up of people. Anne was closely involved in the succession process, from helping define the role through to assessing candidates and supporting the transition itself. The appointment has proved highly successful and Gateway Qualifications continues to benefit from the strength of that decision.

Strengthening governance across the organisation

One of Anne’s greatest strengths is that she combines deep expertise with a very practical approach.

She understands governance, but she also understands people. That balance between accountability and humanity has characterised her contribution throughout her time with Gateway Qualifications.

Anne has played an important part in strengthening governance arrangements across the organisation.

The Governance Committee that exists today didn’t emerge by accident. Anne was instrumental in the work that transformed governance from a more informal arrangement into a formal committee structure with a clear remit and purpose. More recently, she has helped shape further governance developments, including changes to committee structures designed to ensure that Gateway Qualifications remains well positioned for the future.

Much of this work takes place behind the scenes, but it’s fundamental to the success of any organisation. Effective governance creates the conditions in which good decisions can be made, risks can be managed and opportunities can be pursued. Anne has made a lasting contribution in this area.

A career built on research, evidence and learning

Anne’s commitment to learning and development is equally impressive.

Throughout her career Anne has combined leadership roles in further education with research, consultancy and academic work. She holds a doctorate, has published extensively and has contributed to projects commissioned by organisations including:

  • Quality Assurance Agency (QAA)
  • Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)
  • Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)
  • Greater London Authority (GLA)

She has remained actively involved in research for many years and served as co-convenor of the Learning and Skills Research Network.

What colleagues value most, however, is not the list of qualifications or publications. It is the way Anne uses knowledge.

Board discussions were stronger because she brought evidence as well as experience. Strategic decisions were better informed because she understood both the policy context and the practical realities. Colleagues sought her advice because they knew it would be thoughtful, balanced and informed by decades of experience.

A respected and generous leader

Another quality that sets Anne apart is her willingness to share credit.

Whether discussing the relicensing process, governance reform or the appointment of a new Chief Executive, she consistently highlights the contributions of teams, committees and colleagues.

She is far more likely to focus on the achievements of others than her own role in them. That generosity has earned enormous respect across Gateway Qualifications.

A lasting legacy at Gateway Qualifications

As Anne prepares to retire from her formal trustee roles, Gateway Qualifications is stronger because of her contribution. The organisation has benefited from her expertise during periods of change, from her leadership during moments of uncertainty and from her commitment to educational opportunity.

Her impact can be seen in:

  • Stronger governance
  • Successful regulatory outcomes
  • Confident organisational leadership

It can also be seen in the many colleagues who have benefited from her support, advice and encouragement over the years.

Most importantly, it can be seen in the continued strength of an organisation whose purpose reflects values that Anne has championed throughout her career:

  • Widening participation
  • Maintaining standards
  • Creating opportunities for learners

As Anne retires from her formal roles with Gateway Qualifications, we thank her for her exceptional contribution and lasting impact on the organisation. We wish her every success and happiness for the future.
