New ESOL assessment papers available from 14th April 2025
We are refreshing our ESOL assessment papers. The updates will include the retirement of papers and the introduction of new ones.
The last date candidates will be able to sit retired papers is 11th April 2025.
Please plan for this change accordingly. We suggest that all registrations for current assessment papers be completed by 28th March 2025.
Changes come into play from 14th April 2025.
We kindly ask that you ensure this update is shared with all relevant staff within your Centre. Doing so will help everyone stay informed and aligned. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries.

This year’s updates incorporate a number of changes which are as follows:
Number of available papers
To ensure that the development process remains manageable and ensures we can better monitor paper use there will be:
- 4 papers available for all skills at Entry Level.
- 3 papers available for all skills at Level 1, and Level 2 Speaking and Listening.
Contextualisation
- Examples to support the contextualisation of tasks will now only be provided for Entry 1 Reading and Entry 1 Listening tasks.
- We recognise that the majority of Centres are not utilising this function regularly given the burden to ensure task comparability. If you wish to contextualise tasks and require further support, there is a detailed exemplification document available on Prism. Alternatively, please contact your assigned EQA who will be able to provide guidance. Contextualisation examples at all levels for Writing and Speaking tasks will still be provided.
Administration and paperwork
- For all assessments, an attendance register is required as confirmation of the candidate’s attendance. This can be in any format you so wish – this could be your own form or downloaded via QuartzWeb. It may be requested during Quality Assurance activities.
- Additional space has been added to the “Centre use only box” on each candidate assessment paper coversheet. This will make it easier to collate and compare marks following Quality Assurance activities.
