1 — Know the equipment and materials used in painting tasks. 

Painting tools and equipment

  • brushes - sizes for applications
  • filling knife
  • paint kettle
  • screwdriver

Painting materials

  • surface filler
  • sandpaper
  • cleaning solvents
  • paint: 

                - knotting

                - emulsion

                - gloss

                - primer

                - lacquer

                - varnishes

Personal protective equipment

  • overalls
  • gloves
  • safety footwear
  • hardhat if directed

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    List hand tools and equipment to be used in the painting process. 

  • 1.2

    List materials to be used in the painting process. 

  • 1.3

    List Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be used when painting. 

  • 1.4

    Describe the use of all items listed. 

2 — Be able to paint a flat wall area.

Demonstrate safe working practices including correct PPE

  • overalls
  • gloves
  • safety footwear
  • hardhat if required

Demonstrate painting skills

  • selection of brush size for purpose
  • mist coating of a wall
  • two coats emulsion paint

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Select hand tools to paint a flat wall area.

  • 2.2

    Paint a flat wall area.

  • 2.3

    Apply safe working practices throughout completion of the task.
