Criteria for selection of access equipment

  • height required
  • mobility
  • loading of materials on platform
  • time required on site
  • type of work activity

Selection of a working platform

  • measurement of working height
  • selection of suitable platform

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Identify suitable access equipment and working platforms for different types of internal and external work. 

  • 1.2

    Identify a suitable access platform to achieve the working height required. 

  • 1.3

    Measure the working level required and survey the working area.

  • 1.4

    Select an access platform from a plant supplier.

Be able to prepare for erecting access equipment and working platforms. 

Erect access equipment

  • read and follow suppliers' erection instructions
  • follow guidance and training provided
  • position handrails as platform erected
  • use out riggers or stabilisers
  • reverse process for dismantling working platform

Inspecting access equipment

  • check all components prior to erection
  • inspect all fittings in place
  • check diagonal braces
  • ensureall outriggers are tight and stable
  • check wheel locks function

Assessment of hazards and risks

  • production of a risk assessment for platform use
  • list PPE control measures required

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Follow guidance information to erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms. 

  • 2.2

    Carry out inspections of access equipment and working platforms. 

  • 2.3

    Produce a hazard identification record for using access equipment and working platforms. 

  • 2.4

    Select and use appropriate personal equipment (PPE).

Be able to erect and work from access equipment and working platforms. 

Demonstrate:

  • safe erection of a platform for a given application following instructions and training to safely erect the finished platform
  • check the platform against a given safety checklist
  • use and operate from the working platform

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Erect access equipment and working platforms correctly in accordance with given specification, securing where necessary. 

  • 3.2

    Use correct manual handling techniques for erecting and moving access equipment and working platforms. 

  • 3.3

    Access and work from access equipment and working platforms in accordance with current legislation.

Be able to dismantle and store access equipment and working platforms. 

Demonstrate:

  • safe dismantling of a platform for a given application following instructions and training to safely take down the platform
  • store the platform components

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1

    Dismantle access equipment and working platforms in the correct sequence. 

  • 4.2

    Store access equipment and working platforms in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and organisational requirements.
