1 — Be able to select and store materials used to produce basic woodworking joints.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1
    Select materials in accordance with the given specification to produce basic woodworking joints.
  • 1.2

    Store materials correctly and securely.

2 — Be able to mark out to produce basic woodworking joints.

Mark out joints


  • read and understand drawn information on a range of joints
  • produce full size drawn templates for products
  • use of marking out tools

                                        - straight edge


  • transfer templates to timber
  • mark out joints in timber

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Use basic line drawings when marking out to produce basic woodworking joints.

  • 2.2

    Produce full size drawings of the products being produced.

  • 2.3

    Use marking out tools correctly.

  • 2.4

    Check marking out tools to ensure they are accurate prior to commencing the work.

  • 2.5

    Mark out materials.

3 — Be able to use hand tools to produce basic woodworking joints.

Cut joints in timber

  • cut a range of joints in timber

                              - halving joint

                              - bridle joint

                              - dovetail joint

                              - housing joint

                              - mortise and tenon

  • formation of a test frame with a range of joints

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Use a range of woodworking hand tools to produce basic woodworking joints. 

  • 3.2

    Produce basic frames using a range of woodworking joints to a given specification.

  • 3.3

    Use holding devices to secure the work.
