Aim

This unit provides learners with an introduction to the stages and sequence of human growth and development. It also considers the factors that can affect growth and development.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Know about human growth and development.

Indicative Content

Learners should be introduced to the different life stages that people pass through – e.g. infancy, early childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, later adulthood.

Learners need to have a basic understanding of the terms physical, intellectual, social and emotional development. Practical examples will reinforce this learning for example physical development is about the structure of the body and how it grows and develops. Intellectual development is about solving problems, memory and our ability to concentrate. Emotional development is about developing feeling about self and other. Social development is about forming relationships.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Identify the main stages of growth and development across the human lifespan.

  • 1.2

    Outline what is meant by physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.

Know factors which affect human growth and development.

Indicative Content

Factors that may affect growth and development could include social and economic factors, life events, genetics, health and the environment.

Social and economic factors may include family, education and income - especially poverty, cultural influences.

Biological - may include the effects of alcohol (Foetal alcohol syndrome), solvent and drug misuse, poor nutrition, congenital defects and infectious diseases.

Environmental may include exposure to pollution, allergies/ irritants e.g pollen, poor housing.

The effects of ageing may include sensory loss, lack of flexibility, reduced mobility, declining health.

Assessment Criteria

    Identify factors which may affect physical growth and development.

  • 2.2

    Outline circumstances or life events which may affect an individual’s emotional and social well-being. 

  • 2.3

    Outline the effects of ageing in the later stages of life.


3.

Know the types of support available at different stages of life.

Learners needs to be able to outline the different services that provide support.

For example:

  • Local Authority - by provision of support for housing, social care services
  • By provision of effective transport – reduction in pollution emissions (electric buses), more public transport
  • NHS – provision of health care in local areas as well as hospitals – GP surgery, pharmacy, health visitors, district nursing, community psychiatric care
  • Early Intervention services to support the care of children
  • Government funding through benefits to combat poverty
  • Charities that can support people at different stages of their life
  • Community organisations.
