Aim

The aim of this unit is to help learners identify factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle and the support that is available locally to support them in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They will review their own situation and develop a plan that helps them to improve their health.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Know what contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

Some of the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle can result in long life, being able to achieve what you want to either physically or mentally, self-esteem and confidence. There are many factors that can help towards a healthy lifestyle including diet, exercise and leisure activities.

Benefits include better physical and mental health, making friends, learning new skills.

Know how activities contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

This learning outcomes gives the learner the opportunity to research facilities in their own local area. These could include group and individual activities offered by the leisure centre, community groups, library, further education college, private organisations that promote weight loss, exercise e.g. boot camps etc. These could also include activities available online. The learner can then identify the benefits of these activities. This learning outcome could be taught alongside learning outcome 1.

    Identify the benefits of taking part in selected activities on personal well-being.

Know what contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle.

Learners need to consider what contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle. Several activities and choices could be discussed with learners including solvent and alcohol abuse, smoking, excessive eating or fasting, lack of appropriate or sufficient exercise, peer group pressures, unemployment etc. Having chosen different activities or choices, learners should then outline the negative effect on their well-being. For example peer group pressure could result in poor health ( poor skin, high blood pressure, increased susceptibility to diseases) and long term illness e.g.type 2 diabetes, cancer, criminal activity, absence from work or full time education.

    Outline how these activities and choices can have a negative effect on personal well-being.

Be able to develop a personal healthy lifestyle plan.

Questionnaires, on-line assessments or self-devised assessments may be used by learners to identify positive and negative effects of their own lifestyle. Using the results from these assessments, learners should produce a plan to improve their own health and well being. The plan could be over a short period of time and focus on one or more aspects.
