The aim of this unit is to help learners understand how to create websites and factors to consider when doing so.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Know key considerations when creating a web pages.

Key information needed before creating web pages may include:

  • purpose of the web pages
  • who are the potential customers
  • what is the market eg local, national, international
  • what services and information will be on the site
  • functionality
  • budget
  • branding

Issues that will affect the design of web pages may include:

  • needs of the customer
  • customer services e.g. will customers register to use the site
  • simple or complex e.g. visual appeal versus speed, personalisation versus speed
  • budget
  • skills of developer
  • branding

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Describe the key information needed before creating web pages.

  • 1.2

    Outline the issues that will affect the web pages to be developed.

Understand terminology relating to web page development.

Learners need to understand terminology. The following examples are not a definitive list.

Examples may include domain, ISP hosting, cookies, web authoring tools, tags, navigation tools.

    Explain basic terminology in relation to web page development.

Be able to create web pages.

Learners must provide sufficient and valid evidence to achieve this outcome. Learners need to understand:

  • page types, for example: home, contact details, products and services,
  • content – words vs pictures; font style and size, use of colour

    Identify the kind of web pages required to meet stated business need.

  • 3.2

    Plan the content of the pages.

  • 3.3

    Create web pages to meet business need.

Be able to review the process and the outcome of creating web pages.

Learners must provide sufficient and valid evidence to achieve this outcome.

Review of process may include:

  • time
  • steps in the process

Review of webpages may include

  • hits
  • customer feedback
  • functionality

    Review the process of creating the web-pages.

    Review the web pages suggesting ways they could be improved.
