Aim

To develop learners’ understanding of domestic energy use and how to improve domestic energy efficiency.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1

Know about domestic energy use.

Fuel types - gas, electricity, oil, coal.

Ways energy is used – heating, hot water, appliances and devices.

Inventory of energy use in own home (e.g. central heating, kettle, cooker, phone charging)

High energy consumption devices – e.g. kettles, tumble driers, fridges.

Assessment Criteria

Identify the main types of energy used in people's homes.

  • 1.2

Outline the main ways in which energy is used in people's homes.

  • 1.3

Identify household appliances which use high levels of energy.

2

Know about energy efficiency.

Examples of energy efficiency – a house that is well-insulated; without draughts; has low-water-use devices; uses low energy devices.

Energy efficiency certificates: understanding A – G rating.

Assessment Criteria

Give examples of what it means to be energy-efficient in the home.

Identify whether or not a property is energy efficient from the efficiency chart on an energy performance.

3

Reasons to aim for an energy efficient home: less wasteful - so lower bills and less use of non-renewable resources.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

Give reasons why people should try to make their homes as energy efficient as possible.

4

Know how householders can improve domestic energy efficiency.

Changes to reduce energy waste, based on own current habits/home could include:

  • Switching off TV when not in use or washing machine when cycle has finished
  • Unplugging devices when fully charged
  • Putting on a jumper rather than turning up heating
  • Switching off lights when leaving a room or as natural light increases

Sources of advice – key websites such as a government endorsed simpleenergyadvice.org.uk; leaflets from energy companies; local charities/community organisations for face-to-face support.

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1

Give examples of changes they could make to reduce energy waste in their own home.

  • 4.2

Identify key sources of advice on how to reduce energy waste in the home.
