Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Understand different diagrams used to represent data.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1.

State the advantages and disadvantages of a wide range of diagrams to represent data.

2.

Be able to organise and present data.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1.

Identify data as qualitative, quantitative, discrete, or continuous.

  • 2.2.

Select the dominant features of data and suggest plausible interpretations.

  • 2.3.

Construct suitable charts and diagrams including histograms and line graphs with suitable scales.

3.

Know how to calculate and use averages.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1.

Calculate the mean, median and mode of grouped data.

  • 3.2.

Choose an appropriate average and justify the selection.

E.g.,Exam marks- mean; Exam grades - median; qualitative data - mode.

4.

Know how to calculate and use measures of spread.

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1.

Calculate standard deviation of raw data and grouped data.

  • 4.2.

Use mean and standard deviation to compare different data sets.

5.

Be able to use bivariate data.

Assessment Criteria

  • 5.1.

    Calculate a coefficient of correlation.

    E.g., Spearman or Product moment.

  • 5.2.

Make statements about the possible causal relationship between variables with strong correlation.

6.

Be able to calculate probability.

Assessment Criteria

  • 6.1.

Calculate the probability of combined events.

  • 6.2.

Construct tree diagrams and use them to solve problems involving combined events.

  • 6.3.

Identify events which are independent or mutually exclusive.
