Aim

The purpose of the unit is to develop students’ skills in selecting, planning and undertaking a research project in a psychology and/or healthcare related topic/area.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Understand how to select an appropriate area of study for a health and/or psychology related research project.

Research formulation: aims and objectives; rationale for selection; methodology for data collection and analysis; literature review; critique of references from primary sources e.g. questionnaires, interviews; secondary sources e.g. books, journals, internet; scope and limitations; implications e.g. resources.

Hypothesis: definition; suitability; skills and knowledge to be gained; aims and objectives; terms of reference; duration; ethical issues.

Research design: type of research e.g. qualitative, quantitative, systematic, original; methodology; resources; statistical analyses; validity; reliability; control of variables Ethical issues in research using human participants. 

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Select a health and/or psychology related research project.

  • 1.2

    Formulate a research question or hypothesis.

  • 1.3

    Provide a rationale for the choice of a health and/or psychology related topic for the research project including ethical considerations.

  • 1.4

    Assess the feasibility of the research project.

Know how to plan and structure research activity.

Action plan: rationale for research question or hypothesis; milestones; task dates; review dates; monitoring/reviewing process; strategy. The plan should also include which research method/s the student will use to collect data.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Prepare and use an action plan for undertaking the research project.

  • 2.2

    Evaluate the effectiveness of the action plan.


3.

Understanding how to collect data.

Data collection: selection of appropriate tools for data collection. Identify the types of data collected and how this data and selecting the appropriate descriptive and/or inferential statistics for analysing data.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Identify the different types of data that will be collected in undertaking the project e.g. primary, secondary, quantitative data.

  • 3.2

    Select appropriate descriptive and/or inferential statistics for analysing data.
