Aim

The aim of this unit is to consider the principles and values that underpin the work carried out in health and social care settings. Learners will know the importance of respecting and valuing the adults, children and young people that they may work with.

Learners should have an overview of the key principles and values in health and social care. These may include:

  • people-centred approach 
  • encouraging independence
  • work in partnership 
  • confidentiality
  • respect for the individual's cultural, religious and moral beliefs
  • providing a safe environment

Guidance and standards that underpin these principles and values may include relevant Acts of Legislation, workplace policies, Occupational Standards.

Know ways to respect and value those who access services in health and social care (adults, children and young people), early years and childcare.

Additional details

Learners should demonstrate an understanding of why it is important to respect individuals. Examples may include:

  • it is their human right
  • we all need to feel valued for self-esteem, confidence
  • we all have different needs, beliefs, opinions

Ways of valuing adults and children may include:

  • listening to their opinions
  • offering choices
  • non-patronising
  • setting realistic expectations

Learners should understand the term 'person-centred' approach and be able to define the term 'confidentiality'. Simple case studies in an appropriate context for both these terms may help with their understanding.
