The benefits of engaging in leisure activities could include:

  • Reduces stress
  • Prevents depression
  • Improves physical well being
  • Helps with cognitive functioning
  • Socialising prevents isolation
  • Improves relationships
  • Learning something new
  • Boosts confidence
  • Helps to maintain self care

Can reduce behavioural problems for those with dementia or disability

Know the range of leisure activities suitable for adults.

There are a wide range of activities suitable for different groups of adults; these could include

Adults in the community :-

  • Lunch clubs
  • Sporting clubs eg keep fit
  • Specific interest – e.g. art and craft
  • Gardening
  • Shopping

Adults within a care setting

  • Music activities – dancing and singing
  • Craft activity
  • Gardening activity
  • Outings
  • Exercise classes
  • Sensory activities e.g. hand massage

    Give examples of leisure activities suitable for different groups of adults.

Know how to plan and set up a leisure activity for adults.

A specific activity should be chosen for a specific group of adults and a plan produced that contains the key elements :-

Identify the interests/hobbies of the chosen group

  • Space needed – indoors or outside
  • Equipment/materials needed
  • Staffing needed
  • Health and safety concerns
  • How to support people in relation to age, understanding and any disability and cultural/religious needs

    Describe the key elements of a chosen leisure activity for a specific group of adults.

  • 3.2

    Outline what makes the activity appropriate for the specific group and how they might benefit from taking part.

  • 3.3

    List resources required for the chosen activity.

  • 3.4

    Identify any health and safety considerations for the chosen activity.

  • 3.5

    Outline the support that the adults may need to take part in the activity.
