Marking out of carpentry timbers

Be able to saw to a line.

Sawing timber in carpentry

  • marking out cut line to two faces
  • starting the cut
  • finishing the saw cut
  • checking accuracy
  • repeat sawing to given angles

Be able to plane timber.

Using a plane in carpentry

  • mark timber face for smoothing
  • check plane blade is correctly positioned
  • adjust plane blade depth and angle
  • plane timber down to marked level
  • check and adjust blade as required

Be able to use a chisel.

Using a chisel in carpentry

  • repeat the procedure for sawing timber down to a marked depth
  • use a mallet and chisel remove timber down to a saw cut
  • tidy up shoulders or bed of a joint using a chisel

    Mark out timber working from the face and edge.
  • 5.2
    Saw down to the required depth.
  • 5.3
    Use chisel to remove timber.
