  • check drills and bits are in good order
  • check drill chuck is operating correctly
  • insert a drill bit and screwdriver bit and ensure held secure
  • secure portable power tools in cases

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1
    Prepare different types of power sources correctly to operate portable power tools.
  • 1.2
    Check carpentry and joinery power tools and cables for damage.
  • 1.3
    Ensure tools have a valid test certificate.
  • 1.4
    Charge batteries correctly and in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions.
  • 1.5
    Change tooling on portable power tools in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
  • 1.6
    Check for damaged or incorrectly installed tooling.
  • 1.7
    Store portable power tools correctly and securely.

Be able to use carpentry and joinery portable power tools to cut, shape and finish.

Demonstrate correct selection and use of

  • cutting, sanding and shaping materials to a given specification
  • holding devices whilst working
  • PPE whilst using power tools e.g. dust mask, ear defenders

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1
    Cut, shape and sand materials to the given specification.
  • 2.2
    Use holding devices to secure the materials correctly.
  • 2.3
    Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly to carry out the work.
  • 2.4
    Use correct tools for the materials being cut, shaped and finished.

Be able to use carpentry and joinery portable power tools to drill and insert fastenings.

Demonstrate correct selection and use of

  • a drill to pilot a hole to a given specification
  • holding devices whilst drilling
  • fixings for different materials

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1
    Drill holes to the given specification using portable power tools.
  • 3.2
    Secure materials to different surfaces using portable power tools to the given specification.
  • 3.3
    Select suitable fixings for different materials in to the given specification.
