Gateway requirements

Before the apprentice can enter the EPA Gateway process, the following evidence is required:

  • Gateway Declaration and Authentication Statement (this must be signed using an e-signature via a document signing service, such as DocuSign, or a wet signature)
  • Achievement of Level 2 English and Maths
  • Reasonable Adjustments/Special Consideration Request Form where relevant

If the apprentice is aged 16-18 years, they must have achieved English and Maths qualifications to at least Level 2. If the apprentice is aged 19+ when they begin their apprenticeship, the requirement for the attainment of these qualifications is optional (effective from 11th February 2025). Employers may choose whether these qualifications are necessary, and further details regarding funding can be found in the latest funding rules.

Assessment methods

The assessment methods for the Business Administrator apprenticeship consist of the following:

  • Assessment method 1: Knowledge test
    • The knowledge test will be the first assessment method to be taken as it must be passed before the other assessment methods can be taken. The knowledge test is an online multiple-choice test that covers the knowledge elements of the standard. It reflects different scenarios and situations that are covered within the standard. The knowledge test will be completed online and will be invigilated under exam conditions.
  • Assessment method 2: Portfolio-based interview
    • The interview is structured around the portfolio of learning. The portfolio should provide at least one piece of evidence for each of the minimum KSBs. The portfolio of evidence is not directly assessed. It underpins the interview assessment method and therefore will not be assessed by Gateway Qualifications.
  • Assessment method 3: Project Presentation
    • The apprentice delivers a presentation to the IEPA on a project they have completed or a process they have improved. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
