    The objective of the Gateway Qualifications Level 2 Award in Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People is to provide learners with knowledge and understanding to safeguard children, young people and practitioners in the workplace and how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused.

    There is no requirement for learners to have prior skills, knowledge or understanding, although the learners may already be working within children and young people. Centres delivering this qualification can download a Safeguarding Learning and Assessment Workbook which contains learning materials and a workbook to assist learners in recording their evidence. Please contact Gateway Qualifications to obtain this.

    The qualification does not specifically link to any framework, but is based on the National Occupational Standards for Promoting the Safeguarding of Children and Young People.

    This qualification could lead to further learning to support the development of children and young people or into initial teacher training for the further education sector.

    What is the purpose of this qualification?

    This qualification is designed for those working with children and young people. It is intended to enable employees to develop and demonstrate their occupational knowledge of their duties as an employee within the children and young people sector.


    What skills, knowledge, or understanding does this qualification develop?

    This qualification covers the core knowledge and skills required to understand how to safeguard and protect children, young people and practitioners in the workplace.

    It also helps learners to know how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused.

    The qualification comprises of a single mandatory unit:

    • Introduction to safeguarding and protecting children or young people.

    This qualification is primarily intended as a means of developing the competence of those already employed or wishing to be employed within job roles working with children and young people.

    Learners could choose to progress to completing an Intermediate or Advanced Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or other qualifications which can support continuous professional development in working with children and young people including:

    Progression & entry requirements

    The qualification is available to learners aged 18 and above. No prior qualifications or specific level of attainment are required.
