Whether you’re new to delivering Access to HE or looking to refine your approach, the first term sets the tone for student success. From planning and registration to UCAS deadlines and assessment preparation, there’s a lot to get right early on!

We’ve pulled together six key takeaways from our recent “Best Practice” webinar to help you navigate the first few months with clarity and confidence.

1. Promote your course beyond the website
Use local events, social media groups, and newspapers to share success stories and attract new students. Build relationships with university admissions teams to become a go-to referral for students not yet ready for undergraduate study.

2. Choose the right delivery model for your Centre
Whether you start in September or January, tailor your delivery to meet the needs of students and UCAS deadlines. Condensed programmes can still align with July UCAS submission dates.

3. Align your planning documents early
Ensure your assessment grid, assessment plan, assignment briefs, and IV sampling plan are consistent. This alignment is key for smooth moderation and student success.

4. Register students and units on time
Students must be registered within 42 days of starting, and units selected within 12 weeks. These QAA requirements are essential for compliance and must be tracked carefully.

5. Take advantage of free support tools
There’s a wide range of free templates and guides to ensure your materials are fit for purpose and help support students at all levels.

Our free assignment brief checking service is exclusive to approved Centres. This service is designed to ensure briefs are clear and enable students to achieve at all levels. There’s no limit to how many briefs you can submit per diploma, and each one is reviewed by a subject specialist. The service checks that briefs meet the required standards, support accurate grading, and reduce the risk of last-minute corrections or moderation issues. It’s a valuable layer of support to help you feel confident in your planning and delivery.

6. UCAS deadlines and personal statement updates
If you’re delivering across the academic year (September – June), UCAS deadlines are critical. The main deadline is 14th January 2026, but earlier deadlines apply for Oxford and Cambridge applicants. UCAS personal statements have changed too. Now split into three structured questions. Gateway Qualifications’ updated Preparation for Higher Education assignment brief supports students with this process.
