What is the purpose of this qualification?
This qualification is intended for people who, either as part of their working life or in their capacity as a volunteer, come (or will come) into contact with individuals who misuse substances. It is not aimed at substance misuse professionals as it does not support the development of the skills needed to work with the client group.
What skills, knowledge, or understanding does this qualification develop?
The qualification combines an introductory knowledge of drug and alcohol misuse with an understanding of the key principles and values that should underpin the support offered to people misusing substances.
The learners will take three mandatory units:
• Alcohol awareness
• Drug awareness
• Key principles and values for working with people who misuse substances.
How is this qualification different from other, similar qualifications?
The learners can progress from this qualification to level 3 qualifications which include the skills needed by those working with people who misuse substances, such as the Gateway Qualifications Level 3 Certificate in Tackling Substance Misuse.
Which sector does this qualification support?
The qualification supports progression into a range of job roles where learners are likely to come into contact with people who are misusing substances, e.g. support worker in a hostel for the homeless or administrator in a drop-in centre for people who misuse substances. It also supports the development of individuals already in these job roles.
What are the progression options?
The qualification may also aid progression to employment roles with a specific focus on supporting substance misusers, provided further on-the-job training is provided.
