  • Why choose this qualification?

    The qualifications are designed to support learners to develop the kinds of entrepreneurial skills that will be useful if they set up and run their own businesses but will also be useful to them in any work environment.

    Developed in consultation with learning providers, they offer an introduction to enterprise that will be relevant to a wide range of learners, both adults and young people.

    For example, they could complement a vocational programme or apprenticeship, be used to motivate young people who are currently NEET or to provide an alternative route into employment for unemployed adults who may be considering self-employment or setting up their own business.

    The qualifications can also be used to accredit the learning that results from enrichment activity, such as enterprise week or ‘Dragon’s Den’ events.

    What is the purpose of this qualification?

    This qualification is aimed at learners, (both young people and adults) who want to understand entrepreneurship and to begin to develop some of the entrepreneurial skills that will be useful to them if they set up and run their own business but will also be valuable in any work environment.

    It can be used to motivate young people who are currently NEET or to provide an alternative route into employment for unemployed adults who may be considering self-employment or setting up their own business.

    For some trainees, the Award may form a useful part of the ‘work preparation training’ component of their traineeship where improved enterprise skills and attitudes will contribute to their employability. It may also be suitable for learners on supported internships who are considering self-employment as a future progression route. It can also be used to complement vocational learning within a 16-19/25 study programme, in particular providing accreditation for learning associated with enr


    What skills, knowledge, or understanding does this qualification develop?

    This qualification is made up of two mandatory units:

    • Exploring entrepreneurship
    • Exploring and presenting enterprise ideas

    Together these units cover the skills needed for successful entrepreneurship and ways to identify, discuss and present ideas for enterprise.


    How is this qualification different from other, similar qualifications?

    This qualification is aimed at learners, (both young people and adults) who want to understand entrepreneurship and to begin to develop some of the entrepreneurial skills that will be useful to them if they set up and run their own business but will also be valuable in any work environment.

    The level of the award makes it particularly suitable for learners who have not achieved well at school, been out of education and training for a long period, been long-term unemployed, or for some learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities or special educational needs.

    This qualification supports progression to self-employment and to entry-level job roles across sectors


    What are the progression options?

    Learners can progress from this qualification to Level 2 learning in the area of enterprise including, for example, the Gateway Qualifications Level 2 Award in Exploring Enterprise, to employability-focused qualifications such as Gateway Qualifications Level 2 Award in Employability Skills, or to sector-specific qualifications such as the Gateway Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Skills for Retail.

    Learners do not need any prior qualifications or specific level of attainment to take this qualification and it is available to learners of any age.
