Be able to use hand tools required to construct a cavity wall.

    Select appropriate hand tools and equipment required for specified task.
  • 1.2
    Use hand tools and equipment correctly and safely for a set task.
  • 1.3
    Clean, maintain and store tools safely.

Be able to identify relevant materials used for cavity walling.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1
    Identify suitable brick and block type used for cavity walling, for example, facing brick, common brick, or lightweight, aerated, solid block.
  • 2.2
    Identify types of Damp Proof Courses (DPCs).
  • 2.3
    Identify cavity wall ties, for example, stainless steel, plastic.

Be able to carry out activities required when constructing a cavity wall.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1
    Apply basic trowel skills, for example, bed preparation, application of cross joint.
  • 3.2
    Produce neat and tidy cuts to bricks and 100mm blocks using lump hammer and bolster chisel, for example, cut block, half brick.
  • 3.3
    Produce a mortar joint finish, for example, half round, flush.

Be able to construct a cavity wall.

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1
    Follow instructions to construct and complete a range of cavity walling, for example straight 8 bricks long (4 blocks) with double stopped end, corner 5 bricks long by 4 bricks long with tie wires and DPCs installed to Building Regulations.
  • 4.2
    Set out, dry-bond, gauge, level, plumb, jointing finish to standards and tolerances.

Be able to clear work areas following construction of a cavity wall.

Assessment Criteria

  • 5.1
    Clean and store tools in line with safe practice
  • 5.2
    Clean work areas so that it is free from debris.
  • 5.3
    Dispose of or recycle waste materials following required health, safety and environmental procedures.
