The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with the essential English skills needed to support effective communication in everyday and work-related contexts. It supports learners to develop accuracy, clarity, and understanding in English communication, across reading, writing, and speaking and listening, in a range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

The aims and objectives of the qualification are to enable learners to develop confidence and competence in the application of essential English reading, writing and speaking and listening skills, supporting progression to higher-level study, training or employment.
The objectives of this qualification are to enable learners to:
• identify and understand key information presented in a range of different sources
• produce clear, structured writing that is appropriate for purpose and audience
• use grammar, punctuation and spelling with increasing accuracy, including unfamiliar words
• communicate effectively in discussions, including expressing feelings and opinions clearly and concisely
• contribute relevant information, respond appropriately to others and ask relevant questions

This qualification is part of a suite of English qualifications it allows learners to progress through a framework of English units and qualifications from Entry 1 to Level 2.

Progression & entry requirements
There are no specific prior skills/knowledge learners must have for this qualification; however, learners should have a basic proficiency in the English language.
On completion of this qualification learners will be equipped with an introductory level of proficiency in English, forming a basis for further progression to higher-level literacy studies and to broader opportunities within education, training, and employment.
Successful completion of the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in English could allow learners to progress onto:
• Gateway Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in English
• GCSE in English
• Functional Skills qualification in English at Level 2
• further study, including a Gateway Qualifications vocational qualification
