    Available at Entry 1, 2 and Entry 3 these qualifications combine enterprise and employability skills and are particularly suitable for learners who are preparing for employment through engaging in enterprise activity, a common vehicle for skills development at Entry level. The qualifications act as a stepping stones towards employment (including supported and/or self-employment) for learners who may face multiple barriers to achieving employment.

    Rules of Combination

    Learner must complete 13 credits to include a minimum of 8 credits from Group O1 Enterprise Skills and up to 5 credits from Group O2 Employability List. A minimum of 8 credits must be at E3. Learners cannot include more than one unit with the same or similar title. For full details see list of barred units.

    What is the purpose of this qualification?

    This qualification is primarily aimed at learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities or with Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND), who will benefit from a course that develops skills valuable in an employment context, through participating in enterprise activity. However, it is also relevant for learners working at Entry 3 for a number of other reasons, such as missed schooling or long-term unemployment, for whom improved enterprise skills and attitudes may strengthen their chances of gaining employment.


    What skills, knowledge, or understanding does this qualification develop?

    This qualification covers the basic knowledge and skills needed to take part in enterprise activity, many of which which will also be valuable in other employment contexts (e.g. market research and selling skills). There are no mandatory units, enabling learners and providers to work together to select areas of learning appropriate to the individual’s needs, interests and aspirations for employment, in line with the aims of the SEND reforms.


    How is this qualification different from other, similar qualifications?

    There is an Entry 3 Gateway Qualifications Award, Certificate and Extended Certificate in Enterprise. The Certificate is designed to meet the needs of learners, who wish the main focus of their learning to be on enterprise and employability, while for those on 16-19/25 study programmes there will also be space in their programme to include other types of learning including sector-specific learning or that designed to improve independence (some of which may be unaccredited).

    This qualification supports progression to entry-level job roles across sectors, including to supported employment.


    What are the progression options?

    Learners can progress from this qualification to Level 1 learning in the area of employability skills, including, for example, the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Employability Skills or to sector-specific qualifications such as the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Retail.

    Learners do not need any prior qualifications or specific level of attainment to take this qualification and it is available to learners of any age.
